“Brackenmore is a suspenseful thriller that weaves together the exploration of occult ritual with complex human relationships.”

After the untimely death of an uncle she never knew she had, Kate is forced to return to her ancestral home, a tiny rural village in the South of Ireland. Soon after her arrival she meets Tom, a mysterious young local who helps her to rediscover her long-neglected roots and forget about the anxieties of her life in London.

The longer Kate stays in Brackenmore, the more she begins to realise that the eccentricities of its self-protective residents, suspicious of any newcomers, may be more ominous than she first thought, and that she may be more entangled in their enigma than she could have ever realised. A story of festering family history and enigmatic traditions, Brackenmore is a suspenseful thriller that weaves together the exploration of occult ritual with complex human relationships.

Set against one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the world, Brackenmore was predominantly filmed on location in County Kerry, Ireland. It was a disarmingly idyllic rural backdrop for a tale steeped in mysterious folklore and suspicious local tradition. Kate is played by Yorkshire-born Sophie Hopkins, who is now living in London after securing the lead role in the BBC’s Dr. Who spinoff series CLASS.

“The role was naturally demanding on my body and my mind. We spent a couple days in a cold Irish lake which was certainly character building! It’s one of those things I can laugh about now! Emotionally it’s a tough role to play, researching the topics of being cheated on, the occult, growing up in care homes, to drawing from my own personal experiences, which is a box I’d left mentally untouched for years.”

Dublin-bred DJ McGrath debuted in the multi-award winning feature film Philomena in 2013, starring alongside Judi Dench, before he took his role in Brackenmore.
